Spain has imposed a new tax on non-reusable plastic packaging to promote the use of biodegradable packaging

Spain's legislature has recently approved a new tax on single-use, non-reusable plastic packaging, which will come into effect on January 1, 2023.

The new tax is wide-ranging, levied at 0.45 euros per kilogram of non-recyclable plastic packaging and expected to raise about 724m euros a year for the government.

The rate is similar to the new plastic packaging tax approved in Italy, which is also expected to come into effect on 1 January 2023.

However, there is a bigger difference than the plastic packaging tax, which has come into force in the UK since 1 April 2022.

The new tax will affect most industrial and consumer goods companies: it will apply to the manufacture, import and procurement of non-reusable plastic packaging that will eventually be used in the Spanish market; Covering (empty) transactions in packaging materials themselves and packaging products; Suitable for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
